AAJA Member News: July 2013 Roundup

Maria Hechanova (AAJA-Michigan) began a new job as a reporter for KOLD News 13/KMSB FOX 11 in Tucson, Ariz. on June 17, Maria-Hechanova-Desk-Webwhich moved her from a small to medium market. Prior to Tucson, Hechanova was a multimedia journalist with WLNS-TV 6 News, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, Mich.  Her most memorable stories included covering the Dexter tornado and the state’s synthetic marijuana law. She also worked at KYMA-TV News 11 for nearly two years. In 2009, Maria was selected for the AAJA/NBC Universal fellowship in New York City and worked on the Today show. She helped launch AASMBJ (Asian American Small Market Broadcast Journalists) under the guidance of AAJA Vice President for Broadcast George Kiriyama, and is one of the immediate past co-chairs of AASMBJ.  Hechanova grew up in Glendale, Ariz., and graduated from Northern Arizona University.

Valerie Boey’s (AAJA-Florida) interview with an alternate juror of the George Zimmerman trial aired on the Sean Hannity Show on FOX News on Wednesday, July 17. For six weeks, Boey covered the trial inside Judge Debra Nelson’s courtroom from jury selection to Zimmerman’s acquittal in Sanford, Fla. Boey is the Florida Chapter president and a reporter for WOFL-TV.
