AAJA: Asian American Journalists Association

Meeting Minutes Summer 2006

At the 2006 Summer National Board Meeting at the National Convention in Hawaii, the following decisions were made:

Summary

* Election results for the three national office races were announced at the convention. Jeanne Mariani-Belding will be AAJA's next National President. Jam Sardar will be National Vice President for Broadcast. And Cynthia Wang has been re-elected National Treasurer. Their terms begin Jan. 1, 2007. A special election for National Vice President for Print will be held to fill the position that will be vacated by Mariani-Belding. Details will come later this year.

* The Governing Board voted not to renew AAJA's membership in the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, which accredits a number of college journalism and mass communications programs across the country. Although membership in ACEJMC would provide AAJA with a voice to advocate for diversity in journalism education, it was felt by a majority on the Board that seeing results may take too long and that this was one of the cuts that would have to be made in a tough budget year.

* The Fall Governing Board Meeting will be held Dec. 1-3 in San Francisco.

* The deadline for chapters to bid on the 2009 convention was extended to Aug. 1, 2006.

* The agendas and minutes of Board meetings will be posted on AAJA's Web site.
