The AAJA National (Advisory & Governing) Board met for its annual summer meeting in Miami Aug. 1 and 4. At the meeting, the following actions were taken:
Summary
* Chapters volunteered for the following assignments for the 2008 UNITY convention. Those chapters without a specific assignment may be called upon to help with UNITY programming or planning.
- Gala Banquet: New York, San Diego, Texas
- National Journalism Awards: Seattle
- National Scholarships: Washington D.C., Minnesota
- Silent Auction: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia
- Special/Lifetime Awards: Hawaii
- Media Access Workshop: North Carolina (note: Sacramento chapter volunteered after the board meeting to join North Carolina in organizing the workshop)
* The Los Angeles chapter submitted a bid to host the 2010 convention. The Executive Director will do site visits and the Governing Board will make its decision at the fall meeting.
In addition, the Governing Board:
* Voted to create a national journalism awards committee that will select judges for AAJA’s national awards.
* Passed a revised fundraising policy with clearer guidelines on what media and non-media moneys AAJA can take and why.
* Passed bylaws revisions.
* Directed the National Secretary to conduct national elections primarily online via e-mail.
* Approved the formation of an Executive Director search committee.
* Approved extending corporate membership benefits through 2008 for companies that sign up in 2007.
