Meeting Summary Summer 2008

The AAJA National Board (Advisory and Governing) convened for the annual summer meeting, in Chicago on July 26. At the meeting, the following action was taken:

The Advisory Board determined convention assignments for 2009 in Boston (Portland and Hawaii are not assigned a specific duty):

  • Programming+: Michigan, Florida, Asia
  • Silent Auction+: New York, Arizona, Philadelphia, Chicago
  • Gala+: Texas, Minnesota
  • Luncheon+: North Carolina
  • National Scholarships: Seattle, D.C.
  • Special Awards: Los Angeles, San Diego
  • National Awards: Sacramento
  • Media Access Workshop*: Atlanta, San Francisco
    • +: New England involved as host chapter

The Governing Board voted on the following issues:

  • Approval of dues-increase proposal.
      Effective Jan. 1, 2009, full/associate membership will be $65; Gold full/associate membership will be $100; a Platinum membership level for full/associate members will be introduced, at $750 annually. Student membership will increase to $25 annually. (Members who renew for 2009 before the end of 2008 will be eligible for the following rates: $55 for full/associate members, $80 for Gold full/associate, $20 for students. The two-year renewal option will no longer be available.)
  • Approval of Las Vegas and Colorado groups for pre-certification as chapters.

The Governing Board also heard proposals from the New York and Michigan chapters to host the 2011 convention, in Manhattan and Detroit, respectively. The host site will be determined after site visits and other considerations.

The Governing Board will meet Nov. 14-15 in San Francisco.
