Meeting Summary Fall 2008

The AAJA National Governing Board convened for the annual fall meeting, in San Francisco on Nov. 14 and 15, 2008. At the meeting, the following action was taken:

The Governing Board heard proposals from the New York and Michigan chapters to host the 2011 national convention. The Board voted to select Michigan, with Detroit as the convention site.

Sharon Chan, as incoming president, appointed Doris Truong and Neal Justin to join Chan and Jeanne Mariani-Belding as AAJA representatives on the UNITY board, starting in 2009.

The Board also voted on the following issues:

  • Approval of a change in staff retirement plans, as presented by Executive Director Rene Astudillo.
  • The timeline for the 2009 elections, which will involve the positions of national vice president for print and national secretary.
  • Approval of the draft 2009 budget as prepared by Astudillo and accountant Glenn Sugihara.

Announcements:

  • The National Board (Advisory and Governing) will meet March 13-14, 2009, in San Francisco.
  • The following chapters are due for audit in 2009: Arizona, Atlanta, Michigan and Minnesota.
  • AAJA.org is live with information about the 2009 convention in Boston, which has the theme "Road to Reinvention." Airlines offering discounts include American and JetBlue.

The Governing Board representatives should be providing a summary of the discussion on these issues to their buddy chapters and asking for your feedback.
