NYU’s Digital Business Bootcamp for Journalists

This all-day workshop will help you along your career path in journalism by giving you the knowledge and understanding of the business side of the industry. You will hear from the best and brightest about how to be better managers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Attendees will learn business basics including business strategy, branding, content, paywalls, marketing, entrepreneurial skills and intelligent risk-taking, as well as statistics about the biggest trends and an opportunity to connect with others who have gone down the entrepreneurial path.

Course Outline

  • 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.: Keynote Address by Alan Murray
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.: How can you come up with a business strategy when the model is broken? — A discussion about the journalism brand, what formulas are out there, what is working, what’s not working. The panel will look at the merit of measurements, viewership vs. content and the future of journalism.
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: What are the big trends? — A look at the facts and statistics behind the trends in mobile, video, languages, global, print and TV. Q&A with Gregory A. Boyer of PwC.
  • 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.: Lunch break and ignite –   Interactive Picture Gallery
  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Are pay walls here to stay? — A look at the pros and cons of pay walls. National and local newspapers have implemented pay walls in the last few years. A discussion to look at the different variations of pay walls, whether it’s working, motivations and results. What is the role advertisers have and the way forward?
  • 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.: How can you act like an entrepreneur within your own company? — Not everyone can leave their job and start their own company. With all the changes in journalism, there’s a lot of room for innovation right in your own newsroom. The discussion focuses on how you can act like an entrepreneur without leaving your day job.
  • 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.: Launching your own journalism startup — Learn what it takes to start your own startup from people who have done it. Learn about startup methodology, business plans, customer feedback/development, user testing and pivoting. Discussion includes making the pitch to angel investors and venture capitalists, negotiation skills, finding the right advisor and more.
