While you’re at the convention in New York City, be sure to explore Manhattan. The AAJA New York chapter has the following recommendations for dining, attractions and shopping destinations.

Dining

Chinatown: You can’t go wrong with the restaurants in New York City’s Chinatown, which is the oldest one in the United States. For dim sum, we recommend Golden Unicorn, an upscale Cantonese-style restaurant. Location and phone: 18 E Broadway St., 212) 941-0911. $$ For noodles, congee or rice plates, try XO Kitchen. Location and phone: 148 Hester St., (212) 965-8645. $

Del Frisco’s Grille: Located in midtown Manhattan, this upscale restaurant and bar serves mainly modern American cuisine, including steaks and seafood. The restaurant décor features walls showcasing more than 700 cases of wine, as well as an outdoor patio for those who wish to dine al fresco. Location and phone: 50 Rockefeller Plaza, (212) 767-0371. $$$

We also recommend signing up for restaurant deals via savored.com, which enables restaurant goers to make reservations at four-to-five star restaurants and save up to 15 to 30 percent off their bill. Signing up is free, and you can also choose restaurants by area and cuisine.

www.savored.com

Koreatown: If you are craving Korean BBQ, look no further than Don’s Bogam BBQ & Wine Bar. Location and phone: 17 E. 32nd St, (212) 683-2200 $$$. Another Korean BBQ option is Kristabelli, where waiters will grill the meat for you. Location and phone: 8 W. 36th St., (212) 290-2211. $$$

Landmarc (at the Time Warner Center): Located on the third floor of the Time Warner Center, this restaurant features contemporary French and Italian-focused bistro fare and an extensive wine list.

Attractions

Rockefeller Center: Located in midtown Manhattan, Rockefeller Center is the city’s most famous landmark and is arguably one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city.

Come early to New York and boost your career by staying ahead of the curve: Sign up for one of several pre-convention workshops on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

AAJA, in partnership with several industry leaders, will be offering immersive training, ranging from investigative reporting to coding HTML to unlocking the secrets of a successful freelance career. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the workshops.

Investigative Reporters and Editors’ Watchdog Workshop (at convention site)
Investigative Reporters and Editors’ full-day Watchdog Workshop offers tips, tools and training that you can use immediately to add depth to your work, from breaking news coverage to quick-turn enterprise and long-term projects. Reporters, editors and producers return to their newsrooms with hard-hitting story ideas, websites and online resources to explore, lists of key documents to obtain, techniques for more effective reporting, ways to use the web and social media to find information, insight into the latest technology for news gathering and much more.

Covering Your Local Economy, presented by the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Business Journalism (at convention site)
This half-day workshop will teach attendees how to cover the economic angle to any beat, find and use data to develop local stories, and find fresh angles on unemployment and housing trends. Expect to walk away with 10 local economic story ideas you can start next week — whether business is a part of your beat or not.

Coding Workshop (at convention site)
This full-day workshop has two components to learning how to code. Students will first get a four-hour crash course into HTML and CSS. The second half of the day will be devoted to putting coding skills into action and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions for work or personal projects.

Building a Successful Freelance Career (hosted by CUNY)
Join AAJA for a one-day workshop to help develop the connections, skills and strategies you need to build a successful freelance career. Hear from other freelancers about how they’ve made it work. Meet top editors and learn about the pitches they like to receive.

In the Digital Age: Journalists Need To Know the Business (hosted by New York University)
This full-day workshop will help journalists understand the business side of journalism to be better managers and entrepreneurs. Attendees will learn business basics including basic concepts in marketing, accounting, finance, funding, metrics, revenue, and budgeting; learn entrepreneurial skills and intelligent risk-taking; and connect with others who have gone down the entrepreneurial path.

Multiplatform Storytelling (hosted by Columbia University)
This half-day workshop will be focused on telling stories across platforms and teaching people how you can tell a story and package it for delivery via video, audio, social media. Some of the questions to be addressed in a workshop would include: What makes a good video? What makes a good audio? How do you develop a social media campaign for a story?

AAJA will offer more details soon. Additional fees may apply for these pre-convention workshops

You’ll expand your toolkit by developing skills in social media, data visualization, mobile reporting and Web scraping. Whether you’re just starting or a seasoned journalist, you’ll learn strategies to enhance your career and build your leadership skills.

Even as AAJA focuses on helping you build your digital skills, we haven’t forgotten the importance of traditional reporting, and will offer sessions on investigations and covering business, politics, immigration and multicultural communities.

On the Wednesday (Aug. 21) before the convention starts, we’ll have a robust set of intensive training workshops, including an MBA-style workshop at New York University, a multiplatform writing workshop at Columbia University, a freelance journalists workshop at City University of New York, and a coding workshop onsite at the New York Hilton.

During the convention, reporting and visual journalism workshops will combine classroom learning and in-the-field training. We’ll also have a series of inspiring talks by high-profile journalists, entrepreneurs and newsmakers.

Here’s a sampling of the top sessions being planned:

Social newsgathering: Exploring the social sphere to spot story ideas, trends and potential sources.

Mobile skills: Essential apps for your smartphone that you can use for your reporting.

Data visualization: Tools for storytellers, designers and digital publishers to engage your audience. This workshop gives participants a tour of the latest data-viz tools and cool ways in which they’ve been used to tell stories and shed light on complex issues.

Early career advice: How to excel in your first job, get your ducks in a row for a fantastic second job and network with other early career journalists

Entrepreneurship: For journalists who have started an entrepreneurial venture and are beyond that initial burst of energy and optimism: How to evaluate whether your enterprise has a viable future, or engineer a mid-course correction What decisions go into creating a strategy to move forward?

Move to management: You’ve worked hard at your craft and honed your skills. Look ahead now and imagine the ways you can multiply your impact by becoming a formal leader in your newsroom. What do you most need to know as you move into a new role? How do you set the agenda, manage former peers and bring vision and passion to the challenge of fostering journalism for a diverse world?

Often, we think we can’t tackle assignments that demand we speak another language or have intimate understanding of a community. In this session, we show specific multimedia examples of how monolingual reporters overcame these challenges.

How to communicate with designers and developers: In today’s newsrooms, it’s more important than ever for traditional journalists to be able to communicate with designers and developers. Whether it’s building basic news graphics or more complicated interactives, or just making sure your work is best seen on mobile devices, it’s critical to communicate to folks who might not speak your language and work through a different process.

A panel of investigative reporters will fill attendees in on how to find good story ideas, pitch them to editors and balance that work with daily demands.

AAJA is excited that Ann Curry – a veteran television reporter, international correspondent and anchor – will be the keynote speaker at AAJA’s Gala & Awards Banquet in August during the National Convention in New York.

Curry is the NBC News National and International Correspondent/Anchor and TODAY Anchor at Large. She reports for all platforms of NBC News, serves as anchor for multiple primetime specials and substitute anchors for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.” Read her full bio from NBC.

Many know Curry from her time serving as co-anchor of NBC News’ TODAY from June 2011 to June 2012 and as news anchor from March 1997 to June 2011, and as the anchor of “Dateline NBC” from May 2005 until September 2011. Many in AAJA also know Curry as a source of inspiration and pride for her prominence in television and the strength of her journalism, especially as she has sought out and brought to light underreported stories from around the world.

As NBC notes, Curry has conducted numerous exclusive interviews with world leaders and dignitaries – many from Asia - including three notable discussions with the Dalai Lama, sitting down with former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto just two months before her assassination in December 2007 and in September 2011, the first-ever behind-the-scenes-access to the daily schedule of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. She also was one of the few network anchors to travel to Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

Don’t miss Curry at the AAJA gala by registering today for the national convention, Aug. 21-24, at the Hilton New York.
