At the UNITY 2008: Journalists of Color Convention, Dori Maynard, daughter of Nancy Hicks Maynard and Robert C. Maynard received AAJA's Leadership in Diversity Award.
In an industry that was slow to recognize the value of diversity, Dori's mother and father and a handful of other journalists were among the first to drive home that message.
Dori continues their mission today as president and chief executive of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, the organization they founded. The Oakland-based institute has helped open doors for hundreds of minorities to take their role as leaders in newsrooms across the nation, and it has ensured that the media don’t whitewash the news.
Maynard programs have helped the news industry retain its journalists of color. The institute sponsors programs that teach editors and reporters to recognize the “fault lines” of race, class, gender, generation and geography in newsgathering and coverage. Management programs, such as the Media Academy, have helped create a multicultural corps of managers and executives. The Editing Program has trained hundreds of copy editors, many of them now top editors and executives. The Maynard Institute’s website is home to Richard Prince’s Journal-isms, the only blog devoted to the industry and diversity.
