The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is deeply troubled by the news that two American journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, have been indicted in North Korea on charges of espionage.
Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee, who are employees of Current TV, a web-based television channel founded by former Vice President Al Gore, were arrested on March 17 for allegedly crossing the border while conducting interviews with North Korean refugees in China. We firmly believe in their innocence and are concerned that they are to be tried on criminal charges for working as journalists. We respectfully urge North Korean authorities to disclose the nature of the evidence against the journalists, conduct the proceedings in open court, and ensure that Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee are treated fairly. AAJA further calls upon President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to continue to press for their safe release so that they may return to their homes and families in the United States.
