AAJA: Asian American Journalists Association

AAJA's Power of One

August 8, 2008

AAJA has positioned itself as a resource that not only stands for diversity but one that delivers the goods. We’ve made the right programming changes focusing on multimedia and leadership in a 24/7 newsroom and we continue to build bridges with major media companies to create new training programs for students and professions not to just survive, but to thrive.

There’s no doubt that industry cutbacks have brought financial challenges for us. For decades now, AAJA has been heavily focused on media companies’ grants as its major source of its funding. This needs to change. We need to diversify and broaden our funding base and seek out individual donors one to one. To help do this, AAJA launched a new campaign at the UNITY ’08: Journalists of Color convention in Chicago on July 25, 2008 called the Power of One.

The Power of One is a fundraising campaign that focuses on individual donors that not only reaches out to the AAJA membership but to an array of other individuals who share and support our broader goals of diversity, and fairness and accuracy in the coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and issues. The notion here is to develop a broad and deeper base of individual donors.

This is an important campaign for us.

These individual donations, whether it’s $1,000, $100, or even $20 will help create a sea of change for AAJA that will help us create a stronger support base for the future and further our goals even as media company funding shrinks. We want this to be a viral movement, so spread the word. Take the time to give what you can.
