Bobby Calvan, senior staff writer at The Sacramento Bee, attended a week-long Narrative Writing on Deadline course July 13-18, 2008 as an AAJA/Poynter Institute fellow. Calvan currently works as a Healthcare Industry writer and one of the things he learned from the course was the ability to put a human face on some very technical and complicated issues in the healthcare industry. Having primarily worked as a deadline writer, Calvan took the course to build skills of writing long narrative pieces that feature stories with a strong beginning, middle and end.

"There are a lot of talented people out there, but, even people who are veterans can benefit from going to one of these workshops. I use (the training) on a day to day basis. It has helped me tremendously in my writing."

Calvan is an AAJA national advisory board member and a graduate of the 2008 AAJA Executive Leadership Program in San Francisco.

Applications are now available for Poynter Fellowships for 2009. The deadline to apply for programs in group 1 is April 1.
