The Asian American Journalists Association is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who are being detained in North Korea, and urgently requests that all sides take steps to ensure their swift release.

Journalists Ling and Lee, reporters for the San Francisco-based Current TV, were seized Tuesday along the Chinese-North Korean border where they had been working on a story about North Korean refugees, according to news reports. U.S. officials, who have expressed concern to North Korean officials about the reported detentions, were working with Chinese officials and were in contact with Swedish diplomats in North Korea.  The U.S. does not have direct relations with North Korea, and Sweden acts as its representative.

Laura Ling is the sister of Lisa Ling, host of National Geographic Explorer, who has appeared at several AAJA events, both in her hometown of Sacramento and at national gatherings.

Our hearts go out to their families and friends as we join other organizations in calling for fair treatment of journalism professionals throughout the world.
