Twenty-nine Chapter Reps Participate in Camp AAJA

Twenty-nine chapter representatives actively participated in Camp AAJA 2004, a three-day leadership development training held January 22-25 at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, FL.

At the opening night dinner, participants heard an inspiring speech from Camp AAJA alum Ellen Sung. During the next two-and-a-half days, national staff and AAJA strategic planning consultants led participants through exercises to examine and build their chapter goals, vision and values. They learned about AAJA history from the perspective of past and present officers Evelyn Hsu, Esther Wu, and Mae Cheng; practiced ethical decision-making following a talk by Poynter faculty Aly Colón; and exchanged ideas about chapter programs, membership development, and fundraising.

Assisting participants with fundraising discussions were Jon Funabiki of The Ford Foundation, Skip Rhodes of the ChevronTexaco Corporation, Gregory Favre of the Poynter Institute, Nancy Waclawek of the St. Petersburg Times Foundation, and Peter Bhatia of The Oregonian.

Funding for Camp AAJA 2004 was provided by The Ford Foundation with additional support provided by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and the St. Petersburg Times.
