The area hard hit by a cyclone May 3 is lashed with torrential downpours. The official death toll is 78,000, but British authorities say it could be more than 200,000. Because the ruling junta bans journalists and restricts international aid workers, accurate assessments are difficult. One volunteer said the situation has worsened in the past two days.
(May 6) The May 3 cyclone in Burma may have killed 22,500 people in a nation run by a secretive military junta. Global aid offered to the nation has been stalled by the military which has refused entry to assistance teams. Last September, Buddhist protests in Burma received international attention as the military cracked down on demonstrators, and killed a Japanese journalist on assignment.
