China estimates 22,000 people have died because of the earthquake, but expects the death toll to exceed 50,000. Aftershocks add to the calamity, and there's a threat of radiation leaks from a nuclear weapons research lab in the devestated area.

(May 13) Southwest China was hard hit by a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake and 12,000 people are feared dead in the Mianzhu area of Sichuan province. This is China's worst quake in three decades.
