The Angel Island fire that started Sunday night was contained with no damage to the immigration station. The island, in San Francisco Bay, was the first stop for many Chinese immigrants during the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were detained on the island from one week to two years. Through community efforts the immigration station has been preserved, and is noted for Cantonese carvings in the wall engraved by Chinese immigrants of that period. Currently closed for renovation, the station is slated to reopen to the public in February 2009.
