Assemblyember Paul Fong: California Apology to Chinese Americans Becomes State Law

July 24, 2009

The California legislature approved a bill to apologize to Chinese Americans for racist laws enacted during the 19th century Gold Rush, many which were not repealed until the 1940s. The laws barred Chinese from owning land or property, marrying whites, working in the public sector, and testifying against whites in court. Assemblymember Paul Fong (D-Cupertino) introduced ACR 42 and was approved July 17.

Fong will hold a press conference Monday, July 27, 10:30 a.m., at Asian Americans for Community Involvement, 2400 Moorpark Avenue, Suite 300, San Jose, CA 95128. Contact Debbie Diaz Williams (916) 319-2022.
