CNN: iReport Toolkit: The Ingredients of a Good Story

Oct. 5, 2008

CNN's iReport allows citizen journalists to post stories and multimedia content with little or no verification and fact-checking. Oftentimes the postings, such as videos, complement staff-written stories because the citizen journalist was on the scene before reporters were dispatched. However, when an iReport last week said Apple's CEO Steve Jobs had a heart attack, which wasn't confirmed, the news swiftly circulated on the internet and allegedly caused Apple stock prices to fall. CNN and other mainstream media plan to watch citizen journalism contributions more closely before going live.
