An Asian Canadian journalist was released after being abducted and held captive in Afghanistan for a month. Canadian Broadcast Corporation television reporter Mellissa Fung was kidnapped after leaving a refugee camp outside Kabul. Her abduction was not publicized, per an agreement among media, until she was released. The kidnappers' intent was to demand ransom for her release, but no ransom was paid.
Japanese journalist Modoki Yotsukura of Asahi Shimbun and his Afghan colleague Sami Yousafzai, a correspondent for Newsweek, were injured after a gunman opened fire on them in the Hayatabad section of Peshawar in a kidnapping attempt. The area is known for kidnapping for ransom activity.
