The detention of Laura Ling and Euna Lee depicts media's new approach, especially alternative outlets such as Current TV for whom Ling and Lee worked, by sending reporters on assignment with portable gear and a small crew for self-contained run-n-gun coverage. Such independent news gathering could be precarious overseas where reporters make their own decisions and work in questionable political environments. Furthermore, alternative media doesn't always offer legal support to its journalists.
