Veteran newsman Walter Cronkite is reportedly gravely ill and has been ailing for some time. The 92-year-old anchored the CBS Evening News from 1962-1981 and became an American icon. In his early years as anchor, he competed with the rival Huntley-Brinkley Report on NBC, but surpassed that in the late 1960s. CBS News at that time acquired a reputation for accuracy and depth. Connie Chung was the Washington D.C.-based correspondent during part of Cronkite's reign.
