AAJA-Philadelphia Helps Bring National Attention to Local Protest
Jan. 28, 2004
AAJA
AAJA-Philadelphia recently responded to concerns from an area resident about Chink's Steaks, a Philadelphia restaurant that has operated under the same name for 55 years. AAJA-Philadelphia members helped influence their newsrooms to bring attention to this matter, and so far, two TV stations -- Fox29 and ABC-6 -- as well radio station WHYY and the Philadelphia City Paper have covered the issue and the Asian-American community's concerns about the word "Chink." The coverage has sparked other organization, including the Organization of Chinese Americans, to get involved.
AAJA-Philadelphia President Murali Balaji said this is an example of chapter members balancing advocacy and journalism for an effective result. Balaji said the chapter would continue promoting coverage of such issues that affect the APA community in the Philadelphia region.
