Vietnamese Publisher, Community Leader Dies

August 18, 2006

Yen Ngoc Do, editor and publisher of Nguoi Viet Daily News, died Thursday. He was AAJA's 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Under his leadership, the newspaper became the largest and most influential Vietnamese-language newspaper in the United States.

The following statement was issued today by Esther Wu, AAJA national president.

"AAJA is deeply saddened by the news of Yen Do's passing. His legacy spans a lifetime's work on behalf of the Vietnamese refugee community as well as in the field of journalism, particularly the ethnic media. His success in establishing Nguoi Viet Daily News which started as a one-person operation and is now the largest and most well-respected Vietnamese-language newspaper in the United States, is a testament to his commitment to journalism and to his community and a true model of perseverance. AAJA had recognized his great achievements by honoring him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, but it is AAJA that has been deeply honored by having him in our midst as a partner in our mission for journalistic excellence and fair and accurate coverage of our communities.

He will be dearly missed by all of AAJA and the countless number of people whose lives he has touched."
