Andrew DeVigal Receives NPPA award

Andrew DeVigal, multimedia editor at The New York Times, has received the Jim Gordon Editor of the Year award from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). The award promotes "innovative multimedia storytelling at The New York Times' Web site that has helped lead the way in the new styles of visual storytelling." The Gordon Award is given to "the editor of an outstanding newspaper, magazine, video, movie, Web site, book, or other publication or broadcast that supports and promotes strong photojournalism, and the best use of photography, and whose individual dedication and efforts have moved photojournalism's standards forward while also advancing the best interests of all photographers." The NPPA presented its top awards during the Sprague Awards Dinner at the conclusion of the Convergence '09 annual meeting June 13 in Las Vegas.

DeVigal is a graduate of the 1998 Executive Leadership Program in St. Petersburg, Florida and received the ELP Outstanding Leadership Award in 2008. He served as webmaster and editor of AAJA's national website during its formative years until 1999. In 2005, he developed the ELP leadership summit web site, showcasing futurists and industry leaders in discussion about how the news media can capture the audience of tomorrow. He has shared his online expertise as an AAJA convention speaker and in 2005 and 2006 as lead coordinator of the convention student online project, while an assistant professor at San Francisco State University.
