Photo Session Meeting

This is a planning meeting for the photo sessions for all photographers who come to the convention. We will put together the AAJA Photo Exhibit and Silent Auction. Discuss planning for the Photo Shootout. Photo students can also come and get their work critique in a casual atmosphere.

Photography Critique/Mentor Sessions

One-on-one student photo critique sessions with professional photographers and photo editors. Students bring in their portfolio for review by a minimum of five professional photographers and photo editors. No sign-ups needed. Recommendation: Bring in your portfolio on CD, prints and clips of at least 20 images showing a combination of news, features, sports, portrait and photo essays. Coordinators will match students with professionals on the spot.

PhotoShootOut: Art of Minnesota & Silent Photo Auction Planning Session.

The theme deals with the beautiful artistic community of the Minnesota area. Participants are allowed to shoot on digital cameras only. The meeting will explain the rules, discuss ideas and give out digital camera loaners. Winners will be announced at the Gala Banquet. Top winners receive the annual Dith Pran Award trophy and photographic prizes, including a Canon digital camera.

This will also be a planning session for the Silent Photo Auction. Those interested in donating prints and helping set up the Silent Photo Auction should attend this meeting.

Going for the Gold: An Olympic Effort by Photographers in Athens

Photographers and photo editors will talk about their coverage of the Summer Olympics in Athens. They will show great sports images from their coverage of the Games. The photographers will be telling about their own Olympic effort in covering this major event. They will show great Olympic sports photographs as well as tell about the nuts and bolts of shooting and transmitting at the Olympics.

International Projects Photography

Photographers will discuss overseas photo projects from the tsunami to the Iraq war and Liberia. They will show photo stories of their international assignments. They will talk about how one goes about getting the assignment, what to do once you get there, to photo display in your newspaper.

Live Student Photo Critiques - How To Get That First Photo Job/Internship

Top photo editors will do a live critiques of student photographers portfolios. They will also discuss how photo students get internships and get their first job out of school. Discussion topics: do students even have to go to school to get a photo job. Grades don't count - it's what in the portfolio that counts. Will be looking at four top photo students' work.

How to be a Photo Prize Winner

Prize-winning photographers who won the Pulitzer Prize and the Newspaper Photographer of the Year will discuss how they won their prize and how you can win photo prizes too. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Cheryl Diaz Meyer leads the discussion.
