HOW TO GET YOUR NEWS IN THE NEWS: A MEDIA ACCESS AND MEDIA WATCH WORKSHOP FOR SMALL NONPROFIT ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER ORGANIZATIONS

Experienced journalists and media veterans will train representatives of small nonprofit Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations without a professional media relations staff. Together they will cover the basics – better ways to pitch a story, get information across clearly in interviews and deal with concerns as they arise. The workshop will include interactive sessions to practice writing a press release and answering questions on camera. Participants will go home with several tip sheets and a copy of AAJA's handbook, "How to Get Your News in the News." AAJA members who attend will get ideas for putting on a similar workshop and a how-to manual. They will go home equipped to further AAJA's strategic goal of fostering strong connections with community organizations across the nation.

Coordinators: Maya Blackmun, staff writer, The Oregonian; Nancy Daniels, public relations manager at Outrigger Enterprises, Inc. and president of the Hawaii chapter of the Public Relations Society of America .

AAJA RADIO NETWORK'S SOUND SALON

Before hitting the beach, take a few moments to listen to a different kind of wave – the one that wakes you up in the morning, keeps you company on the way home from work, and makes you park the car to laugh out loud or to collect yourself after hearing a powerful story. In the Sound Salon, AAJA Radio Network members share their favorite pieces and their process for getting the story done. All radio enthusiasts are welcome. Come early to listen to The Beat, the newsmagazine of the AAJA Student Radio Project and NPR's Next Generation Radio.

DOCUMENTARY FILM SHOWCASE

AAJA invites the community to a screening of two critically acclaimed Asian American films. “The Slanted Screen” (2006), a one-hour documentary by Jeff Adachi, weaves together rare film clips from the ‘20s to the present with interviews to show how Asian American men have been portrayed in film and television. “An Untold Triumph” (2002), an 85-minute documentary narrated by actor Lou Diamond Phillips, tells the story of the more than 7,000 Filipino immigrants and sons of immigrants who demanded for the right to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, despite being classified as immigrant aliens during a time of strong anti-Asian sentiment. Free and open to the public.

CHAPTER CHALLENGE

Instead of trivia, this year chapters will compete in a scavenger hunt through Waikiki in the annual Chapter Challenge. Thrills, laughs and unique digital photos await the teams that participate. The team that gets the most points or completes the hunt first wins the coveted AAJA Chapter Challenge trophy.
