This session will explore opportunities for new reporting on the current situation in the US and Vietnam due to the use of Agent Orange during the war in Vietnam in the 1970s. Today, we now know that Agent Orange is linked to cancer, diabetes and birth defects among Vietnamese citizens, American veterans and their children and grandchildren. In addition, there are still two dozen hazardous waste sites in Vietnam that have never been adequately cleaned-up. These long term health and environmental issues affect a half million or more American veterans and as many as three million Vietnamese. Segments from newly-released documentaries will support a discussion of the challenges facing reporting on a crisis bridging generations and nations. As part of Authors' Showcase, a discussion focused on two recently published works by Minal Hajratwala, "Leaving India: My Family's Journey From Five Villages to Five Continents" and "Desi Rap: Hip Hop and South Asian America," edited by Murali Balaji and Ajay Nair. "Leaving India" delves into the relationship between personal choice and the great historical forces that helped to shape her family's experiences, bringing to light the story of the Indian diaspora. "Desi Rap" is a collection of essays from South Asian American activists, academics, and hip-hop artists that explores perspectives on hip-hop as a means of expression.
