REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS:
THE FOUNDERS OF AAJA AND
PIONEERING ASIAN AMERICAN JOURNALISTS
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4 | 7PM TO 9PM |
THE HIGHLANDS HOLLYWOOD, 6801 HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD
AAJA invites you to Los Angeles--the city where it all began in 1981. Join fellow AAJA members and friends from across the country who will come together for an evening honoring the vision and fortitude of the AAJA's founders and other Asian American media pioneers.
Among the founders scheduled to attend are Tritia Toyota and Frank Kwan both formerly with KNBC-TV News; and Bill Sing, Nancy Yoshihara, and David Kishiyama all formerly with The Los Angeles Times. This year's opening reception showcases the theme and sets the tenor for "Back to the Future" --recognizing the past and taking the lessons learned forward into a new age of energy, innovation and ingenuity.
Join our Master of Ceremonies Ben Fong-Torres, a virtual Renaissance Media Man who pioneeered in both print and broadcast media during the revolutionary, counter-cultural civil rights-embattled 1960s, when Asians were seen in the media as war-time enemies--if they were seen at all--in celebrating the trials, travails and triumphs of AAJA's founders and an array of Asian American Journalism pioneers.
By recognizing and honoring these Asian American trailblazers in journalism, current and new generations of Asian American journalists will be able to make even greater contributions to the quality, value and relevance of journalism at home and abroad.

Now Accepting Silent Auction Contributions
AAJA is setting its sights high for the 2010 Silent Auction. We are looking for chapters to bring forth the best their region and media have to offer, from wine tours in Napa Valley to historic front-cover reprints from The New York Times. Of course, we are also looking for everything in between--original artwork or collectibles, sports memorabilia and tickets to major sporting events, high-ticket toys, and high-fashion attire. Please drop a line to Cynthia Wang at cynthia_wang@peoplemag.com if you have something to contribute. If the contribution is an offer to be redeemed at a future date, include a description or voucher for the offer on letterhead and send to the same address below.
Please send contributions to and clearly label packages/envelopes exactly as follows:

Just beyond the hubbub of Hollywood lies 120 acres of exquisite botanical gardens, punctuated by art and library galleries that tantalize the intellect and nourish the spirit: The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. Treat yourself to the only place in the world that has a collection that includes an authentic Chinese garden, a copy of the Gutenberg Bible, writings by Newton, Darwin, Lincoln, Dickens, and Charles Bukowski, art by Gainsborough, Lawrence, Turner, Cassatt, and Hopper, a world-class desert garden, a world-renowned Japanese garden, and a score of other treasures. The Huntington is providing transportation from and to the convention hotel and admission free of charge, but we hope that you will consider a suggested donation of $20 per person which will go toward AAJA-Los Angeles scholarships and programs. This offer is only available to the first 100 people who RSVP by July 16. All others will be put on a waiting list and will be notified if there are cancellations.
