Introductory Session

Program Details: The Introductory Session of the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) is held once annually to assist participants with developing a keen understanding of the corporate environment as it applies to the newsroom. ELP helps participants gain valuable skills in identifying newsroom dynamics and boosting leadership skills and performance.
Participants in this intensive, five-day program will gain an increased understanding of the corporate environment and a broadened perspective of the role of leadership in the newsroom. Most importantly, participants will learn how Asian American and Pacific Islander values can be assets to excellence, as well as liabilities, for effect executive performance.
Program topics include:
- Career choices and goal setting
- Understanding cultural values
- Newsroom leadership styles
- Dealing with backlash
- Socialization and self-marketing
- Effective workplace communication
- Leadership strategies
Applicants must have at least five years of professional experiences as print or broadcast journalists. Participants are required to have company support and show potential leadership skills.

Advanced Session
Location: The Advanced Session will take place August 11 (8 a.m. - 6 p.m) and August 12 (8 a.m. - 3 p.m.) just prior to the Boston Convention, which will be held August 12-15, 2009. The deadline to register for the Advanced Session is June 26.
Cost: The cost of the Advanced Session is $125 and the cost for the ELP Alumni Networking Lunch is $50. (Registering for the Advanced Session includes the Networking Lunch). To register for either, please contact Albert Lee.
AAJA is offering fellowships which can cover the cost of tuition, convention registration and other costs. The deadline to apply for the fellowship has passed. ELP fellowships are provided by The New York Times Company and the Newspaper Association of America.
The two-day Advanced Session of The Executive Leadership Program provides additional training in leadership and work/life balance issues, and concludes with the annual ELP Networking Luncheon featuring a panel discussion by top industry professionals.

Mentor Program
Location: February 24, 2009 - McLean, VA.
The ELP Mentor Program offered a unique opportunity for one-on-one career guidance with a mentor, and continued leadership training. Those who are clear about their goals, and who are ready to work on next steps, are urged to apply.
