TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • High School Students
  • College Students

  • Parents

SUMMARY:

The video was produced for AAJA to encourage more Asian Americans to consider a career in broadcast journalism. Produced by AAJA members Randall Yip and Curtiss Kim, the video features six broadcast journalists and interviews with some of their parents. The journalists on the video are: Jamie Nguyen, producer, KTRK TV Houston, Texas; Robert Handa, reporter, KTVU Oakland, California; Jam Sardar, reporter, WOOD TV, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Mimi Jung, reporter and anchor, KING 5 TV, Seattle, Washington; and Wilma Consul and Scott Tong, National Public Radio, Washington D.C.

PURPOSE:

To get young Asian Americans and their parents interested in broadcast journalism. To show the audience that radio and television news is a viable and rewarding career choice.

The percentage of Asian Americans in broadcast journalism has dropped below 2 percent and has decreased every year since 2002 (source: Radio and Television News Directors Association-Ball State Diversity Survey. The 2006 survey is due out in July 2006). Asian American parents have not traditionally encouraged their children to pursue journalism. The percentage of Asian American men in broadcast journalism is critically low.
