The Convention Programming Committee has been hard at work creating programming for #AAJA17 in Philadelphia, July 26-29.

We’re incredibly excited about the programs and sessions we are bringing to Philadelphia this year. AAJA’s programming focuses on improving core skills and making sure our members return to their newsrooms equipped with the latest tools and trends. Whether you are just starting your career or a seasoned journalist, you’ll learn strategies to enhance your career and build your leadership skills.

This year’s theme is “Rise & Revolutionize.” Our programming will focus on this key question: How can we come together as journalists to transform how we cover communities of color?

Our membership is diverse in expertise and career tracks, so we aim to provide something of value to all of our attendees at convention. This year, we’ve divided our core programming into four tracks: Newsgathering, News Delivery, Race/Identity and Leadership/Entrepreneurship.

Sessions and workshops will cover a variety of topics, including investigations, fake news, business, politics, immigration and multicultural communities.

NEWSGATHERING
Spotlight Lite:
Producing investigative journalism with limited resources
You don’t need months and a team of full-time investigative reporters to produce quality investigative journalism. This panel of journalists will share how they juggle enterprise with daily assignments, find tools and learn on the fly to produce important accountability journalism. You’ll get hands-on tips for producing your next investigative story.
Covering the Trump Administration:
An Insider’s Look
There is friction between media and government, by nature. But journalists face an array of new challenges under a new administration that has labeled the media the “enemy of the people.” In this panel, you’ll get an inside look from the reporters tasked with tracking President Trump’s every tweet and investigating his dealings.
Covering Muslim communities & Islam 101
(Presented by AAJA-Muslim American Task Force)
Recent national events have placed immigrants and refugees in the spotlight and under fire — particularly Muslim Americans. How can we come together as journalists to transform and enhance our coverage of Muslim America? This session will cover: how and why current coverage falls short; best-practice tips on providing appropriate language and context; and resources and organizations that stand ready to help.
NEWS DELIVERY
Can the fake news war ever be won? In this age of “alternative facts,” it’s clear that we have a global fake news problem. This panel will discuss the how and why behind the development of fake news, the way that the term has been usurped by questionable mouthpieces, the challenge of increasing the public’s media literacy, and how we can work to identify and prevent the spread of factually untrue content. Can democracy survive without media literacy?
Bots & artificial intelligence:
Your newsroom’s hot, new reporter?
From the LA Times to Quartz to Mic, a wide range of media outlets are enlisting artificial intelligence (AI) in their newsgathering and storytelling. As bots evolve, learn more about how and why journalists are turning to AI for news discovery and distribution. What can your newsroom get out of using AI? Our panel of newsroom bot-builders and bot-users will tell you all about this emerging trend — and where it’s headed.
Reaching Millennial &
Generation Z audiences
Reaching youth is essential to the future of journalism. Bombarded with social media tricks and an ever-growing array of outlets, what can inspire the youngest audiences toward loyalty for a news organization? Hear from a panel of millennial and Gen Z newsroom leaders on their tactics for reaching peers and their visions for the future.
RACE/IDENTITY
Pitching race and identity stories for a mainstream audience Our country is headed toward a multiethnic, linguistically plural and increasingly racially remixed society. Finding and telling the stories that help shape that reality is chief among the challenges facing today’s journalists, as is addressing visibility in the media for AAPIs. As journalists, how do we break through some of the lazy stereotypes that often result in ethnic groups being portrayed as two-dimensional versions of themselves? We’ll dive into this question and more.
 Normalizing diversity:
How to create a culture of hiring and retaining journalists of color in your company
Let’s talk about why and how you can hire and retain diverse talent. What are some best practices by those who’ve been successful in diversifying their teams? How do we do a better job of promoting female and underepresented minorities in leadership? Where do we fall short and why? Is the pipeline problem real? Why does a gender wage gap exist at companies like The Wall Street Journal? How do managers address inequity?

 

Get woke! How to combat diversity issues in the workplace

 

Strategize for ways to cope. How do you combat mansplaining? When you see racism, sexism or bias in the workplace, how can you call it out gracefully and without escalating a situation? A discussion tackling being vocal, your colleague’s perception of you, and choosing between being right and being quiet.

A leader and a lady:
Toppling the media and tech patriarchy
Being a female leader in the media and tech industries presents its own challenges, celebrations, opportunities and insights. Back by popular demand: A panel of women leaders tell their stories and share some tips and tricks for how to pave your own way. This session is off the record.

career paths in journalism

If you want to make the most of your internship, figure out if J-School is right for you or craft your dream role in the newsroom, come hear from newsroom leaders about how they got to where they are. This talk will dive into managing both up and down, navigating internal politics and finding allies in the room so you can succeed. This session is off the record.

Back by popular demand and inspired by previous Executive Leadership Program and I-Con workshops, let’s have a frank conversation about the challenges that minority men face in management and leadership positions. This session is off the record.

Supercharge your photo/video for social media
(Presented by AAJA Photojournalists)
It’s not just about the shot. There are so many other things that matter when posting your visual story on social media — the crop, caption, hashtag and more. There’s no perfect formula for it, but there are things photojournalists can do to make their content compelling and shareable. This panel will share tips on how to become a must-follow photojournalist on every social platform.
Lessons from photographing Standing Rock
(Presented by AAJA Photojournalists)
The Standing Rock protests were about an underrepresented minority group’s fight against the government for protecting their primary water supply. It was a difficult story to cover — the remote location, cold weather condition and competing resources in newsrooms. Our panel of photographers share their experience and explore this case study of overcoming challenges to produce a compelling visual story.
Jazz up your standups and live shots
(Presented by AAJA Small Market Broadcast Journalists)
It takes a lot of creativity to make your stand-up and live shots compelling and stand out among your competitors. It’s especially important for MMJs to learn how to enhance their stories and compel their viewers to stick around. This session will teach hands-on skills to produce creative stand-ups and live shots on deadline.
How to ask the right questions and nail your live interview
(Presented by AAJA Small Market Broadcast Journalists)
  Whether you’re shouting questions at a press conference or conducting a one-on-one interview, it’s important to ask the right questions and get the best sound bite during a live interview. This session will focus on hands-on skills broadcast journalists can use on air.
“Stick to Sports” — Why You Shouldn’t
(Presented by AAJA Sports Task Force)
The political climate transcended to all realms, including sports & entertainment. Frequently, those in the sports and entertainment realms face blowback in the “stick to your job” mold. You will hear from those in sports and entertainment who felt it was important to make their voices heard, in spite of the criticism to come.

The NBA’s voice
(Presented by AAJA Sports Task Force)
Perhaps more than any other major league, the NBA has not shied away from the political climate, with several players affected by Trump’s attempted travel ban or by making a statement by moving the All-Star Game out of Charlotte in support of diversity. You will hear from various Asian Americans involved in the league and are active parts of a diverse climate.
Speak up! Voice coaching workshop
(Presented by AAJA Student Broadcast Journalists)
This workshop will go through various exercises you can use daily so you can leverage your unique voice qualities to get the most bang out of your story. Get ready for lots of tips on how to express the essence of your story’s thesis with voice. We’ll discuss how voice is more important than how you look in broadcast. Bring your scripts and be ready to stand up in front of everybody and scream.
How to succeed as a local news station producer

A lot of broadcast students end up as producers after college. How do you succeed as a producer? How do you work your way to a reporter, if that’s the path you want to take? Hear from local market reporters and producers who can share their experience and tips for success.
