Zain Shauk, who covers the energy industry for Bloomberg News in Houston, will serve as the new co-chair of the MediaWatch Committee of the Asian American Journalists Association, effective immediately.
He will be joined as a co-chair by Abe Kwok of the Arizona Republic when the current chair, Bobby Caina Calvan, steps down from the committee at the end of the year.
MediaWatch speaks on AAJA’s behalf as part of the committee’s role in monitoring America’s newsrooms for fair and accurate coverage of our communities.
Shauk joined the committee last year and has taken the lead in drafting some of the committee’s recent statements.
He previously worked for the Houston Chronicle as an energy reporter and a general assignment reporter. Shauk has also reported for newspapers in suburban Los Angeles and Amman, Jordan. He has covered crime, politics, NASA, small businesses, education and health care, among other issues. He is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
Kwok has been a member of previous incarnations of MediaWatch and is currently a member of AAJA’s National Governing Board. He leads the homepage team of azcentral.com, the Arizona Republic’s website. He is an alumnus of the University of Arizona, but teaches occasionally at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism.
