The Research and Science Portfolio
The research and science portfolio includes programmatic, functional, and outreach elements. It spans all of Pew's programmatic work with a focus on advancing quality research and science and deploying research expertise to further the goals of ongoing projects. The portfolio reviews the design of new research projects across the institution to ensure they are high quality, unbiased, and methodologically sound. The programmatic elements of the portfolio include specific products related to biomedical science, environmental science, Philadelphia public policy research, and fiscal federalism. In addition, research and science has a role in communicating timely, accurate information on state issues to the general public as the Pew daily news publication, Stateline, is part of our organization. The portfolio also includes an operational aspect working to ensure effective management systems across the program department and coordinating with key partners across the institution.
Launched in 1998, Stateline is a web-based source of news and analysis that helps policy makers, media, influential stakeholders, and the public track developments in state capitals nationwide. It produces 20 or more originally reported articles on key state policy issues every month, while also offering a daily news roundup from dozens of state and local media outlets that identifies emerging issues and trends in the 50 states. Stateline also produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series, and intensive, ongoing coverage of major events—e.g., how states are responding to ongoing fiscal pressures. Stateline's readership includes millions of readers, including state officials, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.stateline.org and is distributed to the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, PBS NewsHour, Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today, Washington Post, and others. This position's primary responsibilities are to help lead groundbreaking coverage of state policy developments, develop story ideas, manage a news budget, and manage and mentor a staff of reporters. This position reports to the project director/executive editor, Stateline.
• Edit articles on state policy developments, maintaining the overall editorial tone and direction for Stateline, with an expectation of producing accurate, high-quality stories, graphics, special reports, and interactives that compete at the top levels of American journalism.
• Oversee Stateline's day-to-day operations and quality control. Manage specific direction, editing, and production of all editorial content. Directly supervise reporting, writing, editing, and graphics development and edit complex stories to completion.
• Manage senior and junior reporters and occasional freelancers.
• Plan news coverage, assign or approve story ideas, and exercise news judgment over display of all features on the website.
• Represent Stateline with the media and promote the work of Stateline and Pew to constituent groups through speeches, panel discussions, and other relevant activities. Working with Pew communications staff, strengthen and expand Stateline's profile and credibility among its target audiences.
• Encourage and facilitate collaboration between Stateline staff and Pew researchers focusing on emerging issues and federal, state, and local fiscal and economic topics to share information and ideas about policy developments and trends in and across the states.
• Compile Stateline's daily “Editor's Picks” and the weekly newsletter.
• Encourage and monitor staff use of social media.
• Coordinate the production and publication of Stateline graphics.
• Bachelor's degree required.
• At least eight years of directly related journalism experience, including experience editing enterprise stories. Demonstrated knowledge of how government works is required.
• Minimum of two years of previous direct supervisory experience including managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.
• Nonpartisan perspective and approach.
• Strong multi-media skills, especially with online content, graphics, and technology. Experience with content-sharing partnerships a plus.
• Ability to write clear, informative, and engaging prose, to edit efficiently and assertively to improve stories as they are submitted, and to provide constructive feedback in ways that motivate staff and strengthen their skills.
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, and stay attentive to details.
• Capacity to fit into a creative, fast-paced, and highly professional corporate culture which emphasizes excellence, collegiality and teamwork. Accustomed to working as a member of a team and individually to meet goals.
It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel occasionally within the U.S.
