The managing editor’s primary responsibilities are to:
Oversee the newsroom staff and its contingent of contributors, for both the digital site and the quarterly print magazine.
Generate story ideas, and match them with staff members or with talented freelancers on the outside, whether the piece is conceived for online or print.
Help devise and execute creative approaches to covering journalism beyond the traditional story format.
Build a dynamic, talented pool of writers to do pieces for both digital and print.
Edit stories, both for the web and print magazine.
Partner with the editor and publisher in supervising the work of other staff members to ensure that CJR standards and quality are kept at consistently high levels.
A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred as well as a minimum 5–7 years’ related experience and with a natural ability as an editor.
