News Producer

WAMU is looking for a News Producer to be a creative and coordinating force behind our newscasts. The News Producer collaborates with the host and a team of reporters and editors to deliver smart content to a diverse public media audience.

The News Producer assigns, edits and writes concise news stories to provide a digest of regional news, books guests for host interviews and monitors news events to make sure we provide timely updates on air and online.

We’re looking for a self-starter with good news instincts who is also a quick writer and is comfortable being on the air. We want someone who can generate ideas and develop fresh angles to present compelling news content. The News Producer also needs to be well-organized, detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.

Required Education and Experience

--Degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience

--3-5 years’ experience doing relevant work in a newsroom environment

--5-7 years' experience producing and editing content in a fast-paced deadline-driven broadcast environment

--Strong written and verbal communication skills

--Strong news judgment, and an ability to make good decisions quickly in a fast-paced environment

--Ability to generate fresh story angles, and willingness to experiment with new show approaches

--Superior organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

--Experience producing digital content and social media content

--A strong appetite for daily news coverage

--Knowledge of and a commitment to the mission of public radio journalism

Preferred Education and Experience

--Awareness and knowledge of the Washington region, and critical regional issues
