At AAJA, we are a family.
We are united in a common passion for diversity, in newsrooms and news coverage. Everything we do at AAJA – including mentorship programs, job training, local chapter support and our investigative criminal justice journalism project – reflects our #AAJAfamily values of caring for and lifting up our community.
AAJA-Texas was founded in 1988, one of our earliest chapters. Next year will be our second national convention in the state – and Houston, specifically, is the home of #AAJA18. Every year, the journalists, community organizations and businesses in host cities welcome us to their community and shower us with hospitality. So when we saw the devastation Hurricane Harvey caused and the journalists working around the clock to cover the news, we wanted to do something out of our #AAJAfamily spirit.
In the immediate, we are raising money to send meals to local Houston-area journalists who are working hard to deliver the news for their communities and the country. AAJA is a professional journalism organization, and we want to lend our support to our fellow journalists on the ground. We know a free meal won’t bring the power or water back. But #AAJAfamily always makes sure we’re well fed, and it’s a token of our support and gratitude. We are reaching out to several newsrooms in the area and coordinating meal deliveries. At the end of our fundraiser, we will publish the full list of newsrooms.
In the long-term, we are planning a community service project that will take place during convention. We welcome suggestions for a project that would be the most supportive – and that may become clearer in the coming months, through the post-hurricane recovery.
Thanks for stepping up, #AAJAfamily. Within 12 hours of announcing our fundraiser, we exceeded our goal of $1,000. So we are raising our goal to *$2,500*, which AAJA National will match. All money AAJA receives between August 31 - September 4 will go directly toward buying and sending meals to local newsrooms.
The deadline for donations is Monday, September 4 at 5pm PT.

Dear AAJA Members and Donors,
Thanks to your generous donations last weekend, AAJA raised over $5,000 to support journalists working in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. This amount includes AAJA National's match.
Many of these journalists experienced damage to their homes and property, power outages and worked long hours, sometimes sleeping in their newsrooms.
But throughout the last two weeks, they have persevered to cover the stories of people affected by the hurricane. Your donations have provided meals for over 430 journalists in nine newsrooms so far.
In light of the more recent devastation in Florida, AAJA will continue to use these funds to provide meals for newsrooms in the path of Hurricane Irma. Again, thank you for your generosity, and stay tuned for more updates.
