JCal is seeking mentors for our 2024 program! As a mentor, you’ll help students develop their stories and coach them through the process. AAJA and CalMatters will provide mentors a stipend, travel and accommodations, meals during in-person programming, and complimentary registration to #AAJA24 in Austin, Texas.
The program will take place from April to June. The mentor agreement details are as follows:

Tasks
General
-
- Mentor 2 students
- Assist their story development, coach through the reporting process
- Additional support as needed, within limits
Early April to Mid-June
-
- Estimated 2 hours per week
- Meet mentees virtually to help with story development
- Support in scheduling legislator interview
Note: Mentors may be assigned additional duties may arise as the program develops per the needs of the cohort. Not to be in excess of the estimated 2 hours per week.
June 17-21 at JCal on-site intensive

- Estimated 4 – 8 hours a day, depending on program schedule and mentor availability
- Attend program in-person
- Continue support for mentees with story development
- Serve as a chaperone for field trips and, scheduling permitted, for legislator interviews at the Capitol
- Optional: Lead a skills or discussion workshop for JCal
Note: Mentors are welcome to perform their regular work from the CalMatters office. JCal morning sessions will feature planned workshops and discussions. Afternoons will be generally used for mentor-mentee story development
