A Message From Yung-AAJA Director Ben Pu

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to announce that Beena Raghavendran is going to be taking over as Director of Yung AAJA starting in September 2019.

Beena is an engagement reporter at ProPublica, where she works with the Local Reporting Network, ProPublica’s initiative to support local investigative journalism. Before that, she was an education reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune for about 2.5 years. Beena is an Ohio native and a graduate of the University of Maryland’s journalism school.

She’s been involved with AAJA for about four years, starting out as a VOICES student in 2015 at the San Francisco convention and moving up to serving as the AAJA Minnesota chapter president (talk to her sometime about that one time she emceed the MN chapter’s Trivia Bowl…). She’s been Yung AAJA’s digital committee head for 2019. She has more questions for you all and is excited to kick things off! Be on the lookout for more stuff from her soon.

As for me — my time with yung AAJA has come to an end. When I first created this little meme group several years ago, I never thought it would blossom to be the biggest and most energetic affinity group in all of AAJA’s history. I’m so proud of the passion our members have brought to AAJA, and I hope you will all continue sharing job posts, tips/tricks, and memes with the rest of this great community.

When I went to my first AAJA National conference in 2015, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into and wasn’t sure if journalism was going to work for me. It is because of AAJA and the group we have built together that people like me and you continue to survive and thrive. No matter what newsroom or corner of the world we find ourselves, with a community like ours, we will never be alone.

Thanks, and see you all soon,

Ben Pu
