Career Spotlight: Emma Carew Grovum

Shirley Qiu, co-director of AAJA Women & Non-Binary Voices, will moderate a discussion with Emma on her career path, challenges she’s faced along the way, and advice for young journalists. Then we’ll open up the floor to questions from the audience.

Emma Carew Grovum is a multiplatform storyteller and product manager working as a newsroom consultant. She works at the intersection of storytelling, technology, and audience, most recently at The Daily Beast in New York. Emma was chosen for and completed both the Asian American Journalists Association’s Executive Leadership Program (2017) and Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media (2018).

Shirley Qiu is the audience engagement strategist at the American Press Institute and the co-director of AAJA Women & Non-Binary Voices. Previously, she worked at The Seattle Times, where she focused on engaging audiences for the Features section and Sunday magazine. She also previously served as the AAJA Seattle chapter secretary and national advisory board representative. She graduated from the University of Washington with a double degree in journalism and international studies.
