AAJA offers resources to journalists affected by recent newsroom cuts

The board of directors and headquarters of the Asian American Journalists Association are deeply disappointed to learn of the mass layoffs at The Washington Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and have compiled resources to assist journalists recently affected. We stand in solidarity with the Post’s Guild in opposing the cuts and in supporting the journalists in the affected newsrooms.

We are living in a moment when strong, vital journalism that holds power to account is needed more than ever. Major cuts within our newsrooms threaten an outlet’s essential mission of informing the public and strengthening democracy.

As always, AAJA strives to be a resource for its members:

    • AAJA maintains a Career Center to help journalists find job postings and connect with recruiters.
    • For those who have recently lost their jobs or are still struggling with the impact of layoffs, we are offering waived fees for a year-long membership that provides access to our chapter and affinity group networks and discounted convention rates. Please fill out this form to be considered.
    • For journalists interested in attending this summer’s convention in Minneapolis, we offer complimentary registration for volunteers. Active members can log into their AAJA account and click the #AAJA26 header to access the application.
    • We’ve provided a short resource guide created by members for a past panel to advise those going through layoffs.
    • AAJA-HQ is coordinating with our local chapters, affinity groups, and programs to provide more resources in the coming months and will share updates.

At a time of such deep cuts, we also urge newsrooms to remain committed to diverse pipelines that truly represent our communities. When newsrooms lose diverse voices, they risk missing vital stories affecting us all.
