Yung AAJA presents a webinar on how to land fellowships — and how to make the most of the fellowship experience after you’re named a fellow. Yung AAJA digital committee head Beena Raghavendran will be moderating a panel featuring Corinne Chin, a Seattle Times video editor and AAJA Seattle president, and Samira Sadeque, a New York-based journalist and poet and former AAJA Voices mentor — both of whom will be speaking on fellowships they’ve held in their careers. Corinne Chin: Corinne Chin is a video editor at The Seattle Times, where she films and edits character-driven visual narratives and interactive experiences. Her 2018 video editing portfolio won second place in the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism awards, and her 2016 body of work with photojournalist Erika J. Schultz earned second place in the individual portfolio category. Corinne is also the President of the Seattle chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association, as well as the leader of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force at The Seattle Times. She is a 2019 International Women’s Media Foundation Reporting Fellow and a Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting grantee. Corinne is a graduate of the Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media, the Poynter-NABJ Leadership Academy for Diversity in Digital Media, the ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute and a 2014 GroundTruth Fellowship. She has lent her skills as a panelist and speaker on video journalism, diversity and inclusion; and as a coach for the Story Arc cinematic journalism workshop and on digitalwomenleaders.com. Before joining The Seattle Times in 2014, Corinne was a freelance video journalist reporting in Washington, DC; Nairobi, Kenya; São Paulo, Brazil; and beyond. Corinne earned a bachelor’s degree in magazine writing and a master’s in video journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School, winning a Midwest Emmy for her master’s capstone. Her work has also been recognized by the Radio Television Digital News Association, the Online News Association, Pictures of the Year International, the Society for News Design and more.
Samira Sadeque: Samira Sadeque is a New York-based Bangladeshi journalist and poet focusing on migration, refugee communities, gender, and mental health. She completed her M.S. in Journalism from Columbia Journalism School in 2017. Samira began her journalism career in Dhaka, Bangladesh, covering the 2013 factory collapse, the country’s ethnic and religious minorities, and its LGBT community. Her work appears in Reuters, NPR, Al Jazeera, Quartz, The Lily, AJ+, The Wire.in, Scroll.in, and the Dhaka Tribune among other publications. She is a 2018 Poynter Institute Alum, a 2018 Maynard 200 Fellow, an alum of 2016 International Center For Journalists Digital Media Co-Op, and a 2014 Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) Fellow (Germany).
