Jimmie & Suey Fong Yee Grants
RECIPIENTS: Heather Chen and Ira Gorawara
Heather Chen is a rising senior at Columbia University majoring in sustainable development. She served as the 148th sports editor for the Columbia Daily Spectator, overseeing coverage of the women’s basketball team’s first-ever March Madness appearance and the football team’s first conference title since 1961. She is currently the 149th managing editor for the Spectator, leading over 200 students in the publication’s journalism division during a time when Columbia remains under a national spotlight.
Heather was previously an editorial intern at Defector Media company where she covered the NHL playoffs, the Paris Olympics, and the intersection between activism and sports. She is a two-time regional finalist for the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence awards for her sports writing. As a reporter, she is interested in investigating the ways sports interact with society, and how they can impact or reflect the political climate. She is currently a press assistant at the New York Attorney General’s office.

Ira Gorawara is a rising senior at UCLA double majoring in economics and communication with a minor in professional writing. She is the Sports editor of the Daily Bruin, where she led the section to national recognition, including the College Media Association’s award for the Best Sports Section, and facilitated comprehensive coverage for UCLA’s historic transition to the Big Ten. Ira has reported across Asia for outlets including the South China Morning Post, NDTV, Cricket Hong Kong and Emerging Cricket, covering everything from the 2024 Paris Olympics to grassroots developments in East Asia. This summer, Ira will join the Los Angeles Times Sports desk as an intern.
She also serves as the project manager and an author for UCLA Blueprint, where she writes on regional and societal issues in Los Angeles and coordinates multi-platform production with city partners. Ira is also the author of “The ABCs of Life,” a short story collection published in December 2021, and was invited to speak at the Hong Kong Literary Festival as its youngest-ever author. As an Indian who was born and raised in Hong Kong, she brings a global lens to her storytelling, bolstered by fluency in Mandarin, Hindi and English. Her work is grounded in curiosity, cross-cultural experience and a commitment to breathing life into every narrative.

ABC News / AAJA Alexa Valiente Summer Internship
RECIPIENT: Sanika Tank
Sanika Tank is a senior majoring in Literature, Media and Communications with a focus in Social Justice and Communication at Georgia Tech. She will spend the Summer of 2025 interning with ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir. Previously, she interned with WANF’s Atlanta News First where she was able to contribute to local Atlanta coverage and interviewed Parker Short, President of the Young Democrats of Georgia, who went viral for his lively performance of “Not Like Us” at Vice President Kamala Harris’s rally in Georgia, live on ANF’s streaming service. She is also a former CNN International Features where she contributed to CNN’s Call to Earth Day, helping to script packages, vignettes, and contribute to the live blog for the special day of programming. This past Spring she was an intern with CNN’s International News Desk where she contributed to international news reporting and wrote a story about Yellow Fever in Colombia. She serves as the Managing Editor at the Technique, Georgia Tech’s student newspaper and is passionate about finding ways to tell stories from a student perspective.

Iris Araki is a rising junior at Syracuse University majoring in Magazine, News, and Digital Journalism with a minor in Private Music Study with a concentration in Piano. She has served on the executive board of the Syracuse University chapter of AAJA since their inaugural year in 2023 and continues to foster a welcoming Asian community for journalists and non-journalists on campus. Her passion to amplify underrepresented and misrepresented voices stems from her personal experience of growing up in predominantly white areas and attending predominantly white institutions. She previously interned with NYS Music, covering local artists and events throughout New York State, and runs her own blog, Penny for a Thought.
CNBC Social Media Intern
Blair Bao is a rising senior at New York University majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Media, Culture, and Communications, with a minor in Economics. She is a summer intern at CNBC, where she helps produce timely and engaging content for the network’s flagship social media accounts and contributes to digital business coverage. Previously, Blair worked in the newsroom at WNBC New York, assisting in daily news planning, breaking news production, and field coverage of major events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
She has also interned at Fox News Media and Edelman, gaining experience in both editorial and corporate communication roles. On campus, Blair leads her sorority as Chapter President and manages social strategy for NYU’s basketball team.
Blair is passionate about telling stories at the intersection of business, culture, and consumer trends—especially those that reveal how market forces shape everyday life. She hopes to continue producing accessible, informative, and audience-driven journalism that breaks down complex financial issues and amplifies underrepresented voices in commerce.

MSNBC Podcast Intern
Colette Yamashita Holcomb is a rising senior in the dual degree program between Columbia University and Sciences Po. She studied international politics and law for two years in France at Sciences Po and is finishing her second degree in human rights at Columbia. This summer, she is interning on MSNBC’s podcast team. On campus, she is a staff writer covering university news for the Columbia Daily Spectator. Previously, she interned at the Council on Foreign Relations, Observer, International Press Institute, and Calafia Magazine.

Julie Huynh is a student journalist based in the Boston area. Currently, she is pursuing her BA in English and journalism at Boston College. She is passionate about contributing to meaningful work that aligns with her values of community, culture, and social justice. Through writing and multimedia storytelling, she hopes to bring light to underrepresented voices and experiences in the current news landscape. Previously, Huynh has interned for GBH, The Progressive, and NBC Sports Boston. On campus, she is the proud editor-in-chief of The Gavel, Boston College’s progressive student voice. This summer, she will be interning with the social team at MSNBC in New York City.

MSNBC The Rachel Maddow Show and The Briefing with Jen Psaki Summer Intern
Emily Kim grew up in Atlanta, GA. She is currently a senior at Northwestern University studying journalism and flute performance. She has served as the Assistant Digital Managing Editor and Social Media Editor at The Daily Northwestern and has written for the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Her interest in political reporting was sparked after attending the Democratic and Republican National Conventions last summer. In her free time, Emily enjoys playing music, doing yoga, and looking for the best food spots.

NBC Los Angeles Intern
Sabrina Lam is a rising senior majoring in Journalism, with minors in Political Communication and Narrative Nonfiction, at Emerson College. She previously completed a six month co-op at The Boston Globe where she covered major national stories including the 2024 presidential election, the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the Los Angeles wildfires. Her writing has been cited in the Associated Press and her feature piece on Sean Duffy, President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Transportation, was the No. 1 most read story of the day of its publication. Sabrina currently interns for NBC Los Angeles in the general news unit. She has a passion for reporting that allows her to humanize complex political, economic, and social issues. From months-long reporting on Haitian migrants in Boston who are navigating a life of uncertainty in the United States to an in-depth news segment that examined former President Biden’s student loan relief plans amid the rising cost of higher education in America, Sabrina has been dedicated to producing stories that aim to bring visibility and long-lasting impact to complex issues.

NBCU Local Visuals Team Intern
Hien An Ngo is a rising senior at George Washington University, double majoring in Data Science and Political Science with a minor in Journalism. A Chicago native, she is passionate about community-based storytelling and social justice reporting. During her last internship, she crafted stories about business and politics for CNN’s Data and Graphics team. In college, she served as the Graphics Editor for The GW Hatchet, where she produced interactive data visualizations and digital art.
Passionate about data-driven and visual storytelling, Hien An aspires to pursue a career in data journalism. She hopes to use the skills she has developed studying data science to help uncover systemic inequities and elevate underrepresented communities. Hien An especially enjoys creating interactive graphics that make complex stories more accessible and comprehensible to readers.
In her junior year, she served as Vice President of GW’s Asian American Journalists Association and as President of the Vietnamese Student Association. In these roles, she worked to support GW’s community of Vietnamese and AAPI students.

Chrissa Olson is a rising senior at UC Berkeley where she studies English. This summer she will be reporting on politics at NBC Los Angeles. Previously, she interned at Easy Reader News and Inc. Magazine, and was the city editor for her student paper, The Daily Californian. She is interested in covering business, immigration, racial inequality, housing, and homelessness.
Stanford Chen Internship Grants
RECIPIENTS: Ann Duan and Megan Hart
Ann Duan is a journalism student at The George Washington University. She grew up in Washington State, she’s happy to be joining The Olympian in Olympia, Washington this summer. She will be working as a News Intern, but she especially enjoys covering education and local history. Beyond her work, she also loves to volunteer as an English, art, and journalism teacher. Her work has been featured in The Everett Herald, Street Sense Media and The GW Hatchet.
Megan Hart is a Senior at Central Michigan University pursuing her bachelors in broadcasting and cinematic arts with a concentration in political science. To further her experience in broadcast news, she is interning at Nexstar Media Group’s Wood TV 8 from Grand Rapids, Michigan this summer. Throughout her academic career, she has held the position of Station Supervisor at Moore Hall Television, Teaching Assistant for a producing and directing course, Executive Producer of a variety of student-run shows, and Music Director for 91.5 The Mountain. Her work has been recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in the Hard News and News Feature categories. Megan has a passion for uplifting minority voices in the media and strives to become a political news producer in Washington, DC after graduation.

AAJA-Sacramento Internship with The Sacramento Bee
RECIPIENT: Kat Tran
Kat Tran is a graduating senior studying journalism with an English concentration and multimedia specialization at the University of Florida. They have covered the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, the 60th presidential inauguration, the Florida State Capitol and ecotourism in Costa Rica for WUFT News.
The Society of Professional Journalists recognized their work with 1st place in the feature photography category, and the Hearst Awards Journalism Program awarded them 7th place in the multimedia digital news/enterprise team category. Tran is also one of AAJA’s VOICES 2025 fellows.
Tran’s passion for global perspectives has taken them to Wales, where they studied law at Cardiff University and published articles for The Justice Gap, a magazine focused on law and justice in the U.K.
Outside of journalism, you can find them dancing, oil painting, and preparing for their next DJ set.

AAJA-HQ National Summer Internship
RECIPIENT: Kassie Chen
Kassie is a motivated and determined student at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. With an expected concentration in finance and minor in data science, Kassie aspires to find opportunities where she can use data to predict and analyze key insights and drive financial and economic growth to businesses. Her past achievements have helped her gain first-hand experience in leading projects, conducting and analyzing research within retail industries and non-profit organizations, making her confident in understanding different problems and subjects through multiple lenses. She has a strong interest in pursuing a career in technology and software, using her past and current experiences and knowledge to contribute in the continuous expansion.
Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship
RECIPIENT: Kabir Burman
Kabir Burman is a rising junior at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, where he is double majoring in Political Science and Media & Communication. Originally from Bangalore, India, Kabir is driven by a belief in journalism’s ability to challenge power and amplify underrepresented voices. At The Muhlenberg Weekly, he serves as Multimedia Editor — a role that grew out of his ongoing efforts to reimagine how the paper connects with its audience through emerging formats like video, audio, and social media.
His instinct to build and advocate for more inclusive storytelling isn’t new. In high school, he co-founded his school’s first student-run publication, creating a space for overlooked voices to be heard. Kabir has reported from both India and the U.S., interning at The Allentown Voice, The News Minute, and The Quint, covering topics from education policy and housing justice to digital misinformation. He is also one of the first international student members of The New York Times Corps and a 2025 fellow with AAJA’s VOICES program.
Going forward, he remains committed to impactful journalism — and to experimenting with new formats to ensure that important stories aren’t just told, but truly seen, heard, and felt.
Sam Chu Lin Internship Grant
RECIPIENT: Shani Chiang
Shani Chiang is a recent graduate from Rice University with a bachelors in business (finance) and English (creative writing). She is currently a news intern at Houston Public Media, where she reports on a variety of topics and events important to the Houston community. She has previously interned at Taiwan News and International Community Radio Taipei, and her podcast has been featured on NPR. Shani was born in Tainan, Taiwan and is passionate about telling the stories of AAPI and other underrepresented communities. In her free time, she creates content for her YouTube channel (@shanichiang) and enjoys learning languages. Currently, she’s studying Spanish and Japanese.
William Woo Print and Online News Internship Grant
RECIPIENT: Justin Diep
Justin Diep is a rising junior majoring in journalism, advertising and public relations and broadcast-media production with a political science minor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The 2022 AAJA JCamp alum currently interns at the Omaha World-Herald, where he assisted in the newspaper’s coverage of an ICE raid at a meatpacking plant and its aftermath. He’s previously interned at two other Nebraska newspapers, the Lincoln Journal Star and the Washington County Enterprise, where he wrote a wide range of feature, weather, agriculture and crime stories. In addition to his internships, Justin has been involved with The Daily Nebraskan, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s student newspaper, throughout his entire college career. He is currently their senior news reporter and a staff photographer covering breaking news, student government, university administration, the Nebraska Legislature and more.

AsAmNews-AAJA Broadcast Task Force Internship
RECIPIENT: Akshay Gokul
Akshay Gokul is a rising senior at Duke University, studying Public Policy and Economics with a Journalism and Media Studies minor. As a multimedia journalist, Akshay’s storytelling practice is rooted in producing community-centered stories and utilizing digital media as a mode of community building. Throughout his reporting journey, he has covered social and labor movements in North Carolina, bringing to life stories on the “Uncommitted Movement” in 2024, immigrant rights advocacy in the NC state legislature, and the Durham Association of Educators’ efforts for pay equity. Previously, he served as an executive producer for Carolina Week, a student-run TV newscast at UNC Chapel Hill, and as an audio producer for Shoresides, a civic journalism lab capturing stories of communities in Coastal Carolina. Currently, Akshay is producing a digital storytelling project in collaboration with the Florida Immigrant Coalition, documenting how migrant communities in Florida have navigated changes to immigration policies under President Trump and Governor DeSantis.
Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship
RECIPIENTS: Criselda Caringal, Althea Chang-Cook, Pradipta Mukherjee, Theodore Jason Patrick Ortiz, Akshi Sharma, Mia Warren
Criselda Caringal is an Executive Producer who has over a decade of experience in crafting compelling, high-impact content across broadcast, digital, and social media platforms. She specializes in producing award-winning documentaries, explainers, and podcasts that engage and educate audiences. She successfully launched GMA Network’s first fact-checking show and podcast, driving audience engagement, combating disinformation, and fostering collaborations between multiple teams. For the 2025 mid-term elections in the Philippines, Criselda mounted the GMA Senatorial Debates, a high profile initiative that garnered 20 million views across the network’s broadcast and digital channels. She also launched the company’s first historical podcast to explain important moments in Philippine election history. These are all part of efforts to improve voter literacy and education. As a 2015 Fulbright Scholar, Criselda is committed to promoting information integrity and using media as a tool for positive change. Currently, she is a graduate student taking up ASEAN Studies.
Althea Chang-Cook is editor and writer with an interest in growing diverse and younger audiences online. She’s worked on multimedia content on consumer issues, home appliances, and autos, and has reported on financial news and healthcare. She received her Master’s degree from Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and her Bachelor’s from NYU.

Pradipta Mukherjee is a seasoned business journalist based in India, with over 20 years of experience covering global economic trends, financial markets, and emerging technologies. A longtime observer of international business developments, her work has ranged from stock market-moving financial news to the evolving landscape of tech regulation and governance.
Pradipta was with Bloomberg News for 11 years (2010-2021), where she reported extensively on economic and business affairs. Before joining Bloomberg, she spent five years at Business Standard, one of India’s leading business newspapers, where she contributed as both a reporter and editor.
Her professional journey includes participation in prestigious international journalism fellowships, appearances at global industry conferences, and recognition through several awards, notably the Mary Morgan Hewett Award for Women in Journalism.
Academically, Pradipta holds postgraduate degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication, Economics, and Business Administration. She currently writes for CoinGeek digital media, focusing on developments at the intersection of technology and policy.
In addition to her journalism career, Pradipta is an Editor and Mentor with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA). Through this role, she has supported students across the Asia-Pacific region—guiding them in shaping story ideas and preparing their work for publication ahead of AAJA-Asia’s annual event, N3Con.
Theodore Jason Patrick Ortiz is the Assistant Manager of GMA Integrated News’ Social Media Team, one of the Philippines’ most trusted digital news platforms. At 27, he leads a team of digital journalists managing over 95 million followers, delivering real-time news that informs, engages, and empowers audiences worldwide.
A forward-thinking newsroom leader, Theodore’s work at the intersection of journalism and innovation has earned international recognition. In 2022, he and his team won Best in Audience Engagement at WAN-IFRA’s World and Asian Digital Media Awards for Dapat Totoo—a voter education campaign that used augmented reality, TikTok challenges, and satirical skits to connect with young voters during the Philippine presidential elections. He also spearheaded GMA’s AI Sportscasters Project, honored at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards for pioneering the use of artificial intelligence in Philippine media and sparking nationwide dialogue on AI’s role in journalism.
Theodore is a member of AAJA-Asia and a fellow of its Executive Leadership Program, where he collaborated with international newsroom leaders to promote inclusive, people-first leadership. He is also a proud recipient of the Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship Grant.
Akshi Sharma is a journalist with Hindustan Times, where she has covered a range of topics including politics, policy, culture, and public interest stories. With nine years of newsroom experience, she is known for her clear editing style and strong news sense. Akshi has contributed to in-depth coverage of elections, armed conflicts, and socio-economic issues, offering readers well-researched and balanced perspectives. She is particularly drawn to stories that highlight governance, climate crisis, and rights of marginalised communities. With a background in print journalism as well as digital media, Akshi blends traditional editing with evolving news platforms. Her work reflects a commitment to accuracy, integrity, and accountability. As a part of the Hindustan Times’ editorial team, she continues to engage readers with compelling narratives rooted in facts and context.
Mia (미아) Warren (she/her) is an award-winning audio producer living in Brooklyn, NY. She is the Managing Director of Feet in 2 Worlds (Fi2W), a news outlet and journalism training organization that offers fellowships, internships, and workshops to help immigrant journalists reach new audiences, improve their skills, and advance their careers.
Prior to Fi2W, Mia was a Senior Producer at Sony Podcasts, where she developed several original narrative podcast series. Mia was the co-creator and executive producer of Feeling My Flo, a podcast for tweens all about menstruation. As a producer at StoryCorps from 2015-2019, she created segments for their weekly broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition, contributed to their 2019 Peabody-nominated podcast season, and collaborated on Un(re)solved, an Emmy Award-winning civil rights series with Frontline.
Mia is a 2024 Emerging Leader through the Institute of Nonprofit News (INN), a 2024 Current Rising Star, and a 2025 LION Publishers peer group ambassador for immigrant news leaders from around the U.S.
IJA-AAJA Pacific Islander Journalism Scholarship
RECIPIENTS: Kamalani Moufa, Oskar Ugipaa, Kila Wani
Kamalani Moufa (she/her) is currently a third year college student who transferred to UHM last spring. She’s working towards a bachelor degree in both Pacific Island Studies and Communications with hopes of creating a magazine solely based on Oceania, its people, history and accomplishments. She hopes to create connections throughout the Pacific using storytelling and to engage in community building through art and creativity.

Oskar Ugipa, usually called Mepa, is from the island of Papua from the Moni Tribe one of the tribes that live in the mountains of Papua out of more than five hundred tribes and other Papuan indigenous peoples. Currently, he is pursuing the field of Communication Studies with a degree in journalism at the Indonesian Catholic University Atma Jaya Jakarta, also active in writing in a number of local and national media and active in voicing environmental issues, climate change and the aspirations of the indigenous Papuan people in Indonesia.
Through his writings and documentation, he believes it will open the public’s eyes that indigenous peoples are not only victims of the environmental crisis, but also the main custodians of the remaining ecosystems. He believes that journalism can be a tool for social and environmental change, especially if it is done in favor of ecological justice and the rights of indigenous peoples.
In addition to writing in local and national media, Mepa is also involved in citizen journalism training for indigenous youth, encouraging the involvement of the younger generation in strategic issues affecting the land and the future of the Land of Papua.
Kila Wani is the Managing Director of InsidePNG, a newly established independent and online Investigative Reporting Organization in Papua New Guinea. With a career spanning over private and public sector in management and administrative operations, Kila plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of InsidePNG and ensuring its continued success in the ever-evolving digital media landscape and challenging economic paradigms of the region.
Under Kila’s leadership, InsidePNG is gradually building a position as a trusted source of information, for Papua New Guineans and the region, delivering high quality journalism especially through the investigative reports.
Prior to her role as Managing Director, Kila worked in both private and public sectors for over 10 years, latter part of which she worked for Papua New Guinea’s largest television broadcast station, EMTV, both in production and the main newsroom. A visionary leader with a passion for excellence and growth, Kila is dedicated to upholding InsidePNG’s reputation for journalistic integrity and upholding the highest standards of reporting.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Kila is an advocate for press freedom, She is one of the 24 journalists, media workers that took a hard stand against political interference into the editorial process in the newsroom that resulted in a mass termination of herself and 23 others. Kila is actively engaging with industry leaders to promote the importance of a free and independent press in society. She is also an advocate for violence against women and children, a member of Nogat Marasin Campaign, an NGO dedicated to holding political leaders accountable for lack of health services/medicine supplies in rural areas.
Kila studied Journalism and Public Relations at the University of Papua New Guinea and has trained in various areas including administrative management and border migration processing. She has represented Papua New Guinea in different aspects including Pacific Islands Directors Conference in 2012, volunteered in Pacific Games 2015, invited to attend the Global Investigative Journalists Network (GIJN) Conference in 2023, Gothenburg-Sweden and was privileged to be an attendee and panelist at the Global International Media Conference both in 2022, Honolulu-Hawaii and 2024, Manila Philippines.
