Rising newsroom leaders: You can make 2025 the year you step fully into your leadership, with new support from the Asian American Journalists Association for members accepted into the nation’s top journalism leadership programs. The first round of applications is open now.
Thanks to a generous gift from Simon and June Li, two fellows will attend top programs with support from AAJA. You must first be accepted into one of the programs.

- Columbia’s Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program kicks off with two weeks at Columbia University Journalism School in January and concludes with another session in May. Each participant brings a project of strategic importance to their newsroom they work on during the program. Application deadline is Oct. 13, 2024
- Media Transformation Challenge: A Poynter Institute Executive Fellowship is a year-long program designed to build your lifelong leadership capacity and drive your organization to success. Participants are required to select and pursue an urgent, compelling measurable performance challenge. Application deadline is Oct. 31, 2024
- Executive Association in News Innovation and Leadership at CUNY’s Craig Newmark Journalism School trains leaders to navigate the intersections of product, editorial, business, and technology to become more effective in developing new revenue models and products and managing change and innovation in their organizations. Running from Sept. 2025-June 2026, the application deadline is in spring 2025.

Successful applicants to these programs can apply for a Simon and June Li Leadership Transformation Fellowship to cover tuition. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, and two fellowships will be awarded in the program’s inaugural year.
In addition, the Li’s gift will allow AAJA to provide stipends to members accepted into our signature Executive Leadership Program, if they don’t have access to newsroom training budgets. Their support is also allowing AAJA to expand the program and recruit additional executive coaches.

- AAJA’s ELP is dedicated to developing the next generation of journalists who can lead in uncertain times, meet the challenges of serving our increasingly diverse and cross-cultural world, and build a sustainable future for journalism. It opens with a four-day session in spring and concludes at our annual conference in summer. Application deadline is Feb. 28, 2025

- The fellowships and stipends are designed to remove financial obstacles to newsroom leadership for the most promising Asian American and Pacific Islander media and newsroom leaders, empowering them with the skills and vision to transform our industry, and making them part of a tight-knight community nationwide.
