Join AAJA’s 2025 VOICES cohort!
Our multimedia journalism training fellowship is looking for undergraduate and graduate students who are great storytellers and interested in new technologies and story forms. Reporters, social media strategists, designers, developers, data engineers, podcasters, broadcasters, and bloggers are all welcome to apply.
We are also looking for editors: professional journalists who serve as mentors and coaches to the students. Editors work as supervisors on reporting projects, facilitate training sessions, and prepare the students for graduating from the classroom to the workplace. Being a VOICES editor is an opportunity to hone leadership skills and build lasting relationships.
The editor positions available are:
- Managing editor – Oversees VOICES editorial direction, builds curriculum, manages timelines, and ensures teams are productive. Requires leadership, big-picture thinking, and quick decision-making. Serves as the main volunteer lead for the program.
- Deputy editor – Bridges Managing Editor and teams, supervises stories, provides feedback, and ensures progress. Needs strong organization and adaptability.
- Assignment editor (multiple) – Assigns and coordinates stories, keeps reporters on track, and ensures balanced coverage. Key skills: communication, detail-oriented, and collaborative problem-solving.
- Copy chief – Ensures all VOICES content meets high standards for accuracy, clarity, and style. Manages the copyediting process, provides guidance on grammar and tone, and works closely with editors and reporters. Strong attention to detail, deep knowledge of AP style, and the ability to meet tight deadlines are essential.
VOICES 2025 will consist of training and project work that begins in late spring and culminates in person at #AAJA25 in Seattle, Washington from July 30 to Aug. 3.

ABOUT VOICES
VOICES is a student fellowship program that equips student journalists with career-ready skills to succeed in the continually evolving media landscape. The program aims to help journalists understand how audiences engage with them, how communities view the work they produce and how they can understand the impact their work has. By nurturing relationships between students and professional volunteers, VOICES gives fellows the opportunity to tap into mentors’ networks and grow their own.
