Upholding Our Voices: AAJA Board of Directors and Executive Director Respond to the 2024 Presidential Election Results

A Message from AAJA’s Board of Directors and Executive Director

Dear AAJA Community,

As the presidential election results came in last week, we know that our members were at the center of the news, helping people worldwide make sense of historic results that will affect so many throughout the country.

We see your work, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do – and we want you to know that AAJA will be here to support you.

Times like these bring into sharp relief how crucial journalism is to our communities and to our democracy. During a time of rampant misinformation and disinformation, the work that we do equips citizens with crucial information and shines light on disparities and injustices.

In recent years, the journalism industry has undergone tumultuous change, and it will continue to face challenges and threats in the months and years ahead. We will strive to be nimble and responsive, to be a space for both solidarity and innovation, and to be vigilant about equitable AAPI representation in media.

Adversity has shaped us since AAJA’s founding; each challenge has only strengthened our commitment to truth and representation. Most recently, during the lowest points of the pandemic and through anti-Asian hate, we have come together: to grieve, to celebrate and to find strength in one another. Together, we held newsrooms accountable to covering AAPI communities and issues responsibly. We will continue to do so.

In moments like this, our mission remains: to help AAPIs thrive in newsrooms and to uplift AAPI voices. Let’s continue to strengthen our voices and communities as we build upon what our founders started 43 years ago.

Please take this message as a reminder of why AAJA exists and the critical role each of you play. Take the time to take care of yourself and each other. And if you feel moved to support AAJA’s ongoing work, know that every contribution helps us stand stronger together.

In Solidarity,

Nicole Dungca, AAJA President
