Support AAJA Scholarships

Support young journalists in their search for opportunities to grow their careers by donating to AAJA’s scholarship & internship fund.  All donations will fund scholarship opportunities for aspiring journalists through AAJA’s signature programs, with a commitment from AAJA to allocate minimal funds towards the administration of these funds.  

Signature Scholarships, Internships, Internship Grants and Fellowships Opportunities

AAJA annually offers up to $20,000 in scholarships and grants to journalism students to help offset the costs of education, internships, living expenses and other opportunities. Please note some listed opportunities have their own application and deadline. Be sure you fit the individual opportunity’s criteria.

Internship for AAJA’s National Office 
Remote internship opportunities with AAJA Headquarters. Check back for details. 

Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship
The Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship widens opportunities for mid-career AAJA members pursuing the strategies and skills needed to enter news management and advance within its ranks.  

AAJA x Yahoo Multimedia Journalism Fellowship
AAJA is partnering with Yahoo to host the AAJA x Yahoo Multimedia Journalism Fellowship. One AAJA fellow will be placed with Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance or TechCrunch. This is a PAID fellowship opportunity with a competitive salary.

AAJA Sports Task Force-ESPN Summer Internship
One internship with ESPN and the AAJA Sports Task Force for sports journalism college students that will begin in the summer of 2022. The internship includes pay for qualified candidates.

Scholarships & Grants

Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship $2,000
Currently enrolled students pursuing sports journalism/media as a career; funded by the AAJA Sports Task Force.

CIC/Anna Chennault Scholarship $5,000 
Available to a graduate student who is passionate about journalism and pursuing journalism as a career. This grant pays for educational costs, travel, and registration to AAJA’s annual National Convention.

Jimmie & Suey Fong Yee Grants $2,000
Two $2,000 scholarships available for a current student and a recent graduate pursuing sports journalism to produce a print, digital, audio or visual story about Asians or AAPIs in sports. These grants also offset costs for registration, travel, accommodations and meals for AAJA’s annual National Convention.

Broadcast News Internship Grants

    • Sam Chu Lin Internship Grant up to $500 
      Available to a student with a summer broadcast news internship. 
    • Lloyd LaCuesta Internship Grant up to $1000 
      Available to an Asian American male who has secured a broadcast news internship for the summer season (May or June through August)

Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship Up to $2,000
Available to a graduating high school senior interested in pursuing journalism as a career.
Application Deadline: February 28, 2022

Stanford Chen Internship Grant $2,000 
Available to offset living expenses and costs for college juniors, seniors and graduate students in journalism who have secured a summer internship.
Application Deadline: April 8, 2022

Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship $1,500
Available to current student journalists for writing about the legacy of Vincent Chin in essay form.
Application Deadline: February 28, 2022

William Woo Print and Online News Internship Grant $2,000 
Available to support students and recent graduates who have secured a print or online news internship for the summer season (May or June through August).
Application Deadline: April 8, 2022

Michael Kim Journalism Fellowship $2,000 
Available to young sports broadcast, podcast, or radio journalist/recent college graduate who has less than three years of professional experience. Ideal candidates are journalists in their first TV market.

ABC News / AAJA Alexa Valiente Summer Internship
One paid summer internship with ABC News in New York City or Washington, D.C. is available for current students pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. Housing stipends are available.

Intern for AsAmNews
Earn college credit and valuable experience at AsAmNews. This internship is open until a qualified applicant is selected. Check back for details.

NBC News Summer Fellowships  
Paid summer internships with Comcast NBCUniversal in New York City or New Jersey are available for current students pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. Housing stipends are available.

AAJA Sacramento Internship with The Sacramento Bee
In partnership with The Sacramento Bee, AAJA Sacramento is sponsoring a paid 10-week internship program for aspiring journalists. The program begins in May or June 2021. Applicants must be 2021 AAJA student members.

AAJA New York will support the work of two budding photojournalists by providing each fellow a $5,000 grant as they use their camera to tell the stories of underrepresented communities in New York City, thanks to a grant from Johnson & Johnson.

Sports Journalism Institute
One week of intensive training plus an eight-week paid sports journalism internship available upon completion.
The class of 2023 application is now available. Deadline: November 4, 2022.   

Scholarships & Grants

AAJA/NAJA Pacific Islander Journalism Scholarship $4,500 each 
Two scholarships available for Pacific Islander students and journalists in their careers, in partnership with the Native American Journalists Association. Application Deadline: May 31, 2022. 

Columbia Journalism School Student Fellowship $750 each
Four fellowships available for current students to offset costs for registration, travel, accommodations and meals for AAJA’s annual National Convention. Check back for details. 

ProPublica Diversity Scholarship Program $750  
Available to current high school, college and grad school students to offset costs for AAJA’s annual National Convention. Application deadline: March 7, 2022

White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship $2,000  
Award towards the 2022-2023 academic year, to be used towards the recipient’s education, luncheon with WHCA, a mentor from the WHCA and more.

Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship $10,000 each
In partnership with Facebook, AAJA will award five scholarships to juniors, seniors and graduate students pursuing a degree in digital media/journalism/communications.
