Signature Scholarship, Internship, Internship Grant and Fellowship Opportunities
AAJA offers up to $20,000 in scholarships and grants to journalism students every year. The money can go towards paying a number of things, including tuition and fees, internship costs and living expenses. These opportunities have different deadlines, applications and criteria, so please read the descriptions carefully. The applications for all the opportunities must be submitted via Submittable.

Scholarships & Grants
Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship $2,000
Available to currently enrolled students pursuing sports journalism/media as a career; funded by the AAJA Sports Task Force.
Application Deadline: February 15, 2023
CIC/Anna Chennault Scholarship $5,000
Available to a graduate student who is passionate about journalism and pursuing journalism as a career. This grant pays for educational costs, travel and registration to AAJA’s annual National Convention.

Jimmie & Suey Fong Yee Grants $2,000
Two $2,000 scholarships available for a current student and a recent graduate pursuing sports journalism to produce a print, digital, audio or visual story about Asians or AAPIs in sports. These grants also offset costs for registration, travel, accommodations and meals for AAJA’s annual National Convention.

Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship Up to $2,000
Available to a graduating high school senior interested in pursuing journalism as a career.

Stanford Chen Internship Grant $1,500
Available to offset living expenses and costs for college juniors, seniors and graduate students in journalism who have secured a summer internship.

Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship $1,500
Available to current student journalists for writing about the legacy of Vincent Chin in essay form.

William Woo Print and Online News Internship Grant $2,000
Available to support students and recent graduates who have secured a print or online news internship for the summer season (May or June through August).
Application Deadline: March 30, 2023
Michael Kim Journalism Fellowship $2,000
Available to young sports broadcast, podcast, or radio journalist/recent college graduate who has less than three years of professional experience. Ideal candidates are journalists in their first TV market.

INTERNSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS
Internship for AAJA’s National Office
AAJA is looking for a spring 2023 intern with a start date of March 13. Timing has some flexibility, with the opportunity to continue through the summer to staff AAJA’s 2023 national convention in Washington, D.C.

AAJA Sports Task Force-Bleacher Report Social Content Internship
With exposure to the DEI resources at WBD, the selected intern will be dedicated to the B/R Social Content team and paired with a mentor to guide them through navigating the sports industry, aligning with the AAJA STF mission. In conjunction with the paid internship, the selected candidate will be receiving a $5000 AAJA STF x B/R scholarship.

Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship
The Dinah Eng Leadership Fellowship widens opportunities for mid-career AAJA members pursuing the strategies and skills needed to enter news management and advance within its ranks.

AAJA x Yahoo Multimedia Journalism Fellowship
AAJA is partnering with Yahoo to host the AAJA x Yahoo Multimedia Journalism Fellowship. One AAJA fellow will be placed with Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance or TechCrunch. This is a PAID fellowship opportunity with a competitive salary. Check back for details.
AAJA Sports Task Force-ESPN Summer Internship
ESPN and the AAJA Sports Task Force are offering a joint paid internship for college sports journalism students with ESPN’s social media team in the summer of 2023.

Four fellowships available for current students to offset costs for registration, travel, accommodations and meals for AAJA’s annual National Convention. Check back for details.
AAJA Sacramento Stipend to attend #AAJA23
AAAJA Sacramento is offering stipends to current paid Sacramento Chapter members interested in attending the 2023 AAJA National Convention in Washington, D.C. The convention will be held July 19-22 at the Capital Hilton.

ProPublica Diversity Scholarship Program
Available to current high school, college and grad school students to offset costs for AAJA’s annual National Convention. Check back for details.
White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship $2,000
Award towards the 2022-2023 academic year, to be used towards the recipient’s education, luncheon with WHCA, a mentor from the WHCA and more.

ABC News / AAJA Alexa Valiente Summer Internship
One paid summer internship with ABC News in New York City or Washington, D.C. is available for current students pursuing a career in broadcast journalism.

Intern for AsAmNews
Earn college credit and valuable experience at AsAmNews. This internship is open until a qualified applicant is selected. Check back for details.
NBCU Academy Summer Fellowships
Paid summer internships with Comcast NBCUniversal in New York City or New Jersey are available for current students pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. Housing stipends are available.

AAJA Sacramento Internship with The Sacramento Bee
In partnership with The Sacramento Bee, AAJA Sacramento is sponsoring a paid 10-week internship program for aspiring journalists. The program begins in May or June 2021. Applicants must be 2021 AAJA student members.
Application Deadline: March 15, 2023.
One week of intensive training plus an eight-week paid sports journalism internship available upon completion.
